2019-2020 Cougars Women's Basketball Season Preview

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SAULT STE. MARIE – Different year, different look for women's basketball with a solid mix of new and returning players. The Cougars are looking to start their season on a high note during the season opener on October 26th against the Lambton Lions.

Led by coach Gary Cormier, the Cougars have set lofty goals for themselves as they look to battle for a spot in the playoffs for the first time in school history. The women take on a very challenging opponent right out of the gate but are looking to see where they stack up in this year's OCCA West Division. Although making the playoffs is ideal, Cormier has set other goals for his team as well. "Our goal from the get go is to improve every single day" said Cormier. "We know we are going to be a very different team by the end of the season and will be ready for the post season if our goal is achieved."

The two key returning players for the Cougars this season just happen to be the 2 captains in Cassidy Sabourin and Emma Filion. Sabourin averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game last season while Filion was one of the top shot blockers in the OCAA last season and also walked away from the 2018-2019 campaign with the Sault College Rookie Athlete of the year.

The two key rookies to keep an eye on this season are imports to the program in Clara Yanchuk and Andrea Gorman. Yanchuk is a strong ball handler with a nice complementing outside shot while Gorman looks to add consistent all around play on the court.

This 2019-2020 roster is rounded out by returners Sarah McLeod and Bryanna Baker along with newcomers Jayme Meser, Skylar Toms, Mispon Martin and Taylor Elliot.

The Cougars begin the pursuit of their goals on Saturday October 26th and 27th as they take to the road for a 2-game series against the Lambton Lions.
