Baseball Secures First Home Win of The Season

On Saturday afternoon, in front of a packed and rowdy crowd at I.D.A. Park, the Cougars hosted both Sault College Homecoming and the George Brown Huskies.

In game one, the Cougars came up short, falling behind 8-1 after three innings, before settling in and battling hard for the remainder of the game. Freshman Jayden Valle led the Cougars with a double and a single with the lone RBI. Aiden Russel and Liam Nordby each added their first singles as Cougars, and second-year Chris Deubel added a single of his own. Lucas Ingratta took the loss on the mound, while Nolan Toni and Gavin Lamming were solid coming out of the bullpen in relief.

The Cougars got off to a rough start in game two as the Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Sault couldn't gain momentum in this contest and ended up taking the loss. Travis Rainey and Spencer Sundin both gathered their first hits as Cougars, while returning player Marc Chamberlain added a single of his own. Owen Daynard took the loss for the Cougars.

On Sunday, the Cougars returned to the diamond to battle the highly-ranked Humber Hawks to cap off the weekend.

In what is the biggest win in the teams young history, the Cougars knocked off the Hawks in game one on a complete team effort. Winning Pitcher Matthew Forsey threw a strong 4 innings, keeping the Hawks off balance, and Cole Masse came in and threw 3 shutout innings to get the win. Offensively, the Cougars' attack was led by Jordan Ritchie, who had a key 2-run triple and a single. Jayden Valle added 3 singles and had 3 stolen bases, and Colin Sirois had a single with 2 RBI's for the 6-4 victory.

Game two was a duel between pitchers with the Cougars finishing one run short. Starting Pitcher Carter Gallivan went 5 and 2/3 innings, striking out 6, and kept the Cougars within striking distance for the entire game. Cole Masse and Nolan Toni also added 2 shutout innings in relief. Lucas Ingratta had an RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Cougars left the bases loaded to end the game. Travis Rainey and Colin Sirois added singles on the offensive side.

The Cougars are back at it this coming weekend as they hit the road to visit Lambton College for a double-header on Saturday and will face the defending OCAA Champions, the St. Clair Saints, on Sunday. Games will be live-streamed on OCAA Live.
