Cougars Wrap Up Season with Split Against Sheridan
The men's baseball team wrapped up the 2023 season with a two-game homestand against the Sheridan Bruins at IDA Park on Saturday, October 7th. With the coldest weather of the season visiting Sault Ste. Marie, the Cougars managed to get a split on the final day.
The Cougars came up short in game one, with starting pitcher Carter Gallivan battling through 4 innings and keeping the game within reach at 4-0. However, the Cougars couldn't generate any offense to close the gap. Travis Rainey got the only two hits of the game, collecting a double and a single for his efforts in the 6-0 loss.
In the last game of the 2023 season, the Cougars struck early on a sacrifice fly RBI by Aiden Russel and an RBI single by Dylan Rudge, pushing the lead to 3-0. Starting Pitcher Lucas Ingratta held the lead intact until he came out in the 3rd inning, relieved by Cole Wright who pitched a solid 4th inning.
After Sheridan managed to tie the game at 3 in the 5th inning, Liam Nordby drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Cougars back up in front 4-3 in the home half of the 5th. Then in the bottom of the 6th, Jayden Valle hit a 2-run home run, the first home run at home, for the 6-3 victory. Winning pitcher Gavin Lamming pitched 2 strong innings, and reliever Cole Masse slammed the door shut in the 7th with 2 strikeouts, picking up his second save of the season as the Cougars held on for the victory to wrap up the season.
The Cougars finished the season with a 6-12 record, which was a positive step for the program as they managed to triple their win total from 2022.
