Cougars Varsity Teams enjoy weekend sweep!

Cougars Varsity Teams enjoy weekend sweep!

An action-packed Cougars sports weekend kicked off with the women's hockey team defeating the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils 9-0 on Friday night. Cassidy Dobson recorded her second straight shutout in the opening game while backstopping the Cougars to victory. Offensively, Materia Land was the star of the game recording a hattrick and adding two helpers.

In the rematch on Saturday afternoon, the Cougars came out flying and recorded 24 shots in the first period on route to a 12-0 victory in the opening match up of the Winter Classic. Amy Carlson led the charge offensively for the cougars recording 6 points (2G, 4A), while linemates Marie-Pier Lecours (1G, 3A) & Amelia Williams (0G, 4A) recorded 4 points each. Farrah Farstad was in net and recorded 16 saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

Emily Moore had herself a weekend recording 7 points (5G, 2A) putting her in sole possession of 1st place in the ACHA WD2 scoring race with 38 points. Emma Lee had 6 points (3G, 3A) over the two-game set to vault up to second in the league scoring race with 36 points.

The Women's Hockey team will be back in action with 3 games this upcoming weekend – January 19th at 6:30PM vs Assiniboine Cougars and a double header on Saturday January 20th at 9:30AM vs Dakota College & 8:30PM vs Assiniboine. All action takes place at the Northern Community Centre.

The Men's hockey team had to reschedule their Winter Classic matchup versus the University of Cincinnati Bearcats until Sunday afternoon as the weather caused travel delays for the Bearcats. The Cougars were not to be denied in the Winter Classic as they battled through a chippy affair that saw 46 minutes in penalties called. The Cougars rolled to an 8-2 victory and were led by Ethan Esposito who notched 2 goals and added 2 assists. Trennis Riley made 22 saves in the winning effort.

The Men's hockey team is in action again this weekend with a trio of games Friday, Saturday & Sunday at the Goggin Ice Centre in Oxford, OH. Keep an eye on our social media channels for how to catch the action against Miami (OH), Davenport University & Concordia Wisconsin.

Sault College Cougars Curling had a successful weekend at the Mohawk College Invitational Bonspiel. The Cougars had 3 teams competing in the action. The Men's team finished the weekend with 2 wins and a loss, defeating Humber College 6-3 and Fanshawe 8-1 before falling to Mohawk College 4-2.

In Mixed Doubles action, Sault1 (Ava Engel & Evan Bowman) defeated Mohawk 7-5, before falling to Humber 6-3 & Sault2 by a score of 4-2. Sault2 (Brooke Nicholson & Charles Darling) kept a clean sheet as they went 3-0 over the weekend with a convincing victory over Mohawk 7-0, Humber 5-4 and a hard-fought match against Sault1 4-2.
