Cougars Hockey finishes up busy weekend!

Cougars Hockey finishes up busy weekend!

Sault College Varsity hockey teams were busy this past weekend with our Women’s team hosting the Sault Showcase and our Men’s varsity team heading down to the Goggin Ice Centre for the Ohio Showcase.

Women’s Hockey

The Sault College Cougars Women’s hockey team hosted the Sault Showcase over the weekend, welcoming some top competition from around the ACHA. In their weekend opener on Friday night, it was an all Cougars matchup against the undefeated Assiniboine Community College Cougars. Assiniboine pounced early taking a 1-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game. Emily Moore responded shortly afterwards to tie the game before Assiniboine added a second tally before the end of the first period.  Emma Lee tied the game at 2 early in the second with a tap in at the far post. The highlight of the night came from Moore, scoring her second and eventually game winner on a goal of the year candidate, turning the defenseman inside out before finding twine. Materia Land sealed the 5-2 victory with a late empty-net goal. The crowd was electric all night as Cassidy Dobson shut the door turning aside 19 of the 21 shots she faced.

Saturday brought a double dose of hockey action. In the early morning game, the Cougars faced the Dakota College LadyJacks. Despite taking 8 penalties, the Cougars rolled to a 5-0 victory. The offensive was led by Jenna Jackson, who opened the scoring in the first before adding a second insurance marker early in the second frame. Halle MacLachlan picked up a pair of assists in the winning effort. In net, Farrah Farstad recorded 18 saves for her 6th shutout of the season, setting a Sault College hockey record (Men’s or Women’s) for single season shutouts!

In the second game on Saturday, the highly anticipated rematch between Sault College & Assiniboine was slated for an 8:30PM puck drop. After a back and forth start to the first period, Assiniboine finished the period strong with a pair of goals in the final 30 seconds to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Emily Brunet would record her 6th goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-1, but that would be as close as Sault College would get on Saturday night. Assiniboine added one more insurance marker and skated to a 4-1 victory, handing Sault College their first loss of the season. Cassidy Dobson was back between the pipes, recording 25 saves.

The Women’s Hockey team will be back in action again this weekend as they host Miami (OH) Redhawks for 2 games, Friday January 26th at 7:00PM & Saturday January 27th at 12:00PM at the Northern Community Centre.

Men’s Hockey

Cougars Men’s Hockey traveled down to the Goggin Ice Centre for a weekend showcase hosted by Miami (OH) Redhawks. In their first game, the Men’s team battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to secure a 5-3 victory over the host team. The Cougars were led offensively by first year forward Dylan Winsor (2 Goals) & Defenseman Jackson Jaques (2Goals, 1 Assist) in the opening game. Trennis Riley recorded 28 saves en route to his 11th win of the season.

In the second game of the weekend, the Cougar’s Men’s hockey team squared off against Davenport University. A back-and-forth affair saw Sault College take a 1-0 lead early in the game. Things got a little chippy as the game wore on, with the Cougars taking 5 penalties over the final 2 periods before securing the 8-2 victory over the Panthers. Zach Tarantini was between the pipes for the Cougars.

In their final game of the weekend, Sault College squared off against familiar foe Concordia University of Wisconsin. Concordia came out flying scoring their first of 2 goals in the opening frame less than 7 minutes into the game. Sault College managed to cut the Falcons lead to 2-1 late in the first period after a goal by Ethan Esposito. The deficit remained at 1 goal heading into the third period after both teams managed to score a goal during the second. A pair of empty net goals sealed the Cougars fate as they fell to the Falcons by a final score of 6-3. Jacson Jaques continued a strong weekend picking up a pair of assists in the defeat. Trennis Riley turned in another solid performance, recording 31 saves on 35 shots for Sault College.

The Cougar’s Men’s team are back in action again next weekend travelling to Wisconsin to face off against the Falcons in a 2-game set.
