Cougars Hockey wins 3 of 4!

Cougars Hockey wins 3 of 4!

Sault College hockey teams played a pair of 2-game series this weekend. The Women’s team played host to the University of Miami (OH) our Men’s team travelled to Concordia University Wisconsin for 2 games as the rivalry starts heating up between the Falcons & the Cougars.

Women’s Hockey

The Cougars women’s varsity hockey team played host to the University of Miami (OH) RedHawks for a 2-game set over the weekend. The action kicked off on Friday night at the Northern Community Centre with Cougars goaltender Farrah Farstad continuing her historic season by recording her 7th shutout of the season as the Cougars blanked the RedHawks 11-0. Jasmine Groleau opened the scoring just over a minute and a half into the game recording her first of 2 goals on the night, and the Cougars wouldn’t look back adding 4 more goals before the opening period was finished. Four Cougars players would record 3 points on the night; Emma lee (2G, 1A), Groleau (2G, 2A), Materia Land (1G, 2A) and the offensive star of the game and team Captain Marie-Pier Lecours who recorded 6 points (0G, 6A) leading the Cougars to the decisive victory. It was Lecours 3rd point of the night that was memorable as it marked the captains 100th career point with Sault College!

In the second game of the weekend, the Cougars picked up right where they left off, with Zoe Weaver opening the scoring less than 2 minutes into the game. Materia Land added to the lead under 4 minutes later, and that would be all that the Cougars needed as they cruised to a 10-1 victory. Emily Moore had 3 points (1G, 2A) to add to her league leading total of 46 points (23G, 23A). M-P Lecours was back at it again as she recorded 4 points (1G, 3A) to lead the Cougars offensively. Riley Richardson was in goal to record her 3rd win of the season, turning aside 14 of the 15 shots she faced.

The Cougars are on the road next week with 3 games against Niagara University & Mercyhurst. Keep an eye on our social media channels for how to stream the games!

Men’s Hockey

Sault College men’s varsity hockey was on the road against the Concordia University Wisconsin for a two-game series, looking to avenge their loss from the Miami showcase last weekend. Friday night saw a late start time of 9:45PM locally, and the teams came out firing everything on net. Zach Tarantini stood tall in the first period turning aside all 14 shots that were thrown his way. Jackson Reda matched the task for the Falcons turning aside 7 shots in the opening frame. Sault College came out flying in the second period, with a pair of goals from Chase Johnson & Ethan Espostio 1 minute apart to take a 2-0 lead. Penalties became a problem as the period wore on, and Concordia forward Chuck Emme scored 4 straight goals on the powerplay, giving the Falcons a 4-2 lead heading into the 3rd. A back-and-forth 3rd period saw the Cougars tie the game up at 4 before falling behind once more and battling to score late to tie the game up at 5-5. Overtime would solve nothing, and the game would head to a shootout. Trennis Riley turned aside both shooters he faced, while Nick Jameus & Ethan Esposito scored on their attempts to secure the win 6-5. Jameus (1G, 1A) & Ethan Novello (0G, 2A) led the way offensively with 2 points each in the victory.

In Saturday Matinee action, a tough start for Sault College saw the Cougars fall behind 3-0 after the first period. The Falcons would add 1 more goal in the second before goals from Jackson Jaques & Michael Chaffay would cut the lead to 4-2. This was the closest the Cougars would get in the game as the Falcons potent powerplay continued firing on all cylinders to take a 5-2 lead into the 3rd. Concordia would eventually skate to a 6-2 victory to split the weekend series. Trennis Riley was in net for the Cougars, turning aside 26 of the 32 shots he faced.

Cougars Men’s Hockey is back in action at home this weekend with a pair of games on Friday at 7:00PM & Saturday at 12:00PM against the Northern Michigan Wildcats. You can catch all the action at the Northern Community Centre!
