Sault College brings home the hardware!

Sault College Cougars Curling had a successful weekend as they hosted the OCAA Curling Championships at the YNCU Curling Club.

On the Men’s side, the Cougars battled through the round robin picking up victories against Confederation College & Fanshawe College. They would finish off the round robin with a 2-2 record to qualify for the elimination round. In their semifinal they battled hard against defending champions Mohawk College but came up short losing 7-6. The Men would have a quick turnaround to prepare for their bronze medal matchup with Fanshawe. The first end of their bronze medal match game was one to remember as the Cougars picked up 7 points, before stealing another pair in the second end. Fanshawe would get on the board with a single in the third, but that was as close as they would get as Sault College cruised to a 12-1 victory to win the bronze medal and secure a spot at the national championships.

Sault College had 2 teams competing in the mixed doubles division. Sault2 battled hard through the round robin picking up wins against Fleming1, Mohawk and Fanshawe. They finished their round robin play with a 3-3 record and missed out on the playoff round by rule of the tiebreaker as their season came to an end. It was a great effort by Evan Bowman and Ava Nichols throughout the entire championship.

The other mixed team competing in the championship was Sault1, who cruised through the round robin stages with a 5-1 record, taking their only loss against Humber. They would qualify for the elimination round with a semifinal matchup against Mohawk. This proved to be the closest match of all as Sault1 managed a single point in the eighth end to force extras. In the extra end it was Brooke Nicholson providing the heroics as she drew to the button to steal 1 and punch their ticket to the finals.

Sault1 looked to avenge their only loss of the round robin as they squared off against Humber in the gold medal game. Sault1 would steal a single in the first end followed by a pair in the second end. Humber would get on the board with a single point in the third end and steal 2 points in the fourth end to tie up the match. Sault College would manage a single point in the fifth end, with Humber taking 2 in the sixth to go up 5-4. Sault College would take a single in the seventh to tie the game up heading into the eighth and final end. The eighth end came down to the final shot with Humber left to navigate through a maze of guards. Sault College would manage to steal 1 and claim the OCAA Championship gold 6-5.

Way to go Cougars Curling!
