Regular Season ends with a Weekend Sweep
Sault College Cougars women’s hockey played host to the Michigan State Spartans for a 2-game set this past weekend.
The action kicked off on Friday night at the Northern Community Centre with Senior’s Night. After a special pregame ceremony honouring the seven seniors on the team: Marie-Pier Lecours, Amy Carlson, Meagan Daley, Emily Brunet, Emma Lee, Jasmine Groleau & Victoria Misiak, the Cougars came out ready to play with Daley opening the scoring under 5 minutes into the opening period, her first of 2 goals on the night. The Cougars would add 3 more in the first period with goals by Materia Land, Emily Moore & Amelia Byers. The Cougars would add another 6 goals in the second period before cruising to an 11-0 victory. On a night that was all about the Seniors, they would lead the charge offensively with Emily Brunet picking up 4 assists, while Emma Lee had a hattrick (3G, 0A) and Jasmine Groleau added 3 points of her own (1G, 2A). Farrah Farstad was in net for the Cougars, recording her eighth shutout of the season!
The Saturday afternoon rematch would prove to be much of what fans saw on Friday night as M-P Lecours got the party started less than 40 seconds into the game. Emma Lee would continue her successful weekend with another 3-point night scoring 4 minutes later and adding a pair of assists throughout the game. Emily Moore (4Pts – 2G, 2A) opened the flood gets with a pair of goals in 5 minutes and the Cougars would take a 6-0 lead into the first intermission. Recent addition Danica Niro would add her second goal as a member of the Cougars in the second period as they went on to win 10-0. Materia Land, Niro & Lecours would all finish the night with a goal and an assist, while Riley Richardson turned aside all 12 shots she faced for her 2nd shutout of the season.
Sault College turns its focus to the post season as they prepare for regionals and Nationals coming up in the next few weeks.
