GAME 1: SAULT COUGARS vs CANADORE PANTHERS

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – The Cougars had a big game on Saturday as they went up against the Canadore Panthers, the team they beat the first game of the season in thrilling OT fashion, this time looking to win their first home game of the season. The Cougars came out hot right from the tip off going on a 17-4 run. Simon Wal got the ball rolling with 8 points on 4 of 7 shooting followed closely by Jaylyne Moore-Tucker with 4 points in the opening frame. The Cougars would also do their job defensively making the Panthers take tough shots and cleaning up the rebounds when necessary. The Cougars would out-rebound the Panthers 21-12 in the 1st quarter and take a 19-8 lead into the 2nd.

The Cougars kept the pressure on in the 2nd with another big quarter of play by Simon Wal who scored 17 and the other starters for the Sault would be extremely effective to finish out the first half as new comer Tristen Kamal hit two 3's, and Kevon Clarke put up 6 points with 9 rebounds and Jaylyne Moore-Tucker contributed with 8 points and 8 rebounds to finish off an impressive first half with a 45-27 lead.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Panthers found some rhythm in the 2nd as they shot 55.6% from the field in the ten-minute stretch. The Panthers Ravione Young proved hard to contain as he attempted to lead the comeback for Canadore with 14 points in the frame but the Cougars defense would find a way to contain the threat with Kevon Clarke, Tristen Kamal, and Jaylyne Moore-Tucker being big presences defensively. Kamal and Clarke would score 8 points and 6 points respectively to contribute to the 76-54 lead they would carry into the final quarter.

The Panthers would make another run in the 4th trying to mount a comeback and spoil the Cougars performance but head coach Pat Murray would call a timeout to settle things down. The reset was just what the Cougars needed as Anthony Hall hit a couple clutch shots and the team locked down defensively to secure the Cougars first home win in three years with a final of 95-82.

Cougars Scoring: Simon Wal (32 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Tristen Kamal (19 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists), Jaylyne Moore-Tucker (15 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists), Kevon Clarke (13 points, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals).
