MEN'S BASKETBALL

GAME 1: SAULT COUGARS vs NIAGARA KNIGHTS

WELLAND, ON – The Cougars went into Welland to play the Niagara Knights over the weekend looking to keep their momentum going from their second win of the season last weekend against Canadore. Unfortunately, it would be Niagara who would gain momentum from the jump as the Knights went out to a 9-0 run to take the lead. The Cougars would fight back in the first quarter behind a couple buckets from Simon Wal which would get the Sault to within one point 11-10. The changes of momentum would continue as the Knights went on a 13 point unanswered run to take a first quarter lead of 24-10 into the second.

The second quarter proved to be much more even as the Cougars and Knights exchanged blows in a closely contested ten minutes of play. Simon Wal, Tristen Kamal and Kevon Clarke made their presence felt in the quarter as they carried the offensive load for the Cougars. The Knights would only outscore the Cougars by three in the quarter (19-16) and take a 43-26 lead into the half

The Cougars offence would pick up the pace in the second half, starting in the third quarter by a strong performance by Kevon Clarke with 10 points and 4 rebounds in the frame while Jaylyne Moore-Tucker had 6 points and 2 rebounds. As the Cougars offence picked up the pace, so too did the Knights as they would go on to score a big 32 points in the quarter powered by all Niagara starters hitting the score sheet.

Much like the second, the fourth quarter was much more even for both teams. Kevon Clarke would continue to be a big presence in the second half for the Cougars draining 7 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. Moore-Tucker and Stephen Miller would score 4 each and Valentine Okeke and Amos Varfee would each score 3, but in the end the Knights proved to be too much and would walk away with a 97-69 win.

Cougars Scoring: Kevon Clarke (22 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists), Simon Wal (14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist), Jaylyne Moore-Tucker (10 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist).

GAME 2: SAULT COUGARS vs NIAGARA KNIGHTS

WELLAND, ON – The Cougars were looking to avenge their 28 points loss on Saturday as they took the court for game two against the Niagara Knights. The first quarter was very even throughout with both teams trading chances early on. The Cougars would move the ball around better in the ladder half of the quarter as Simon Wal and Jaylyne Moore-Tucker added 5 and 4 points apiece to carry a lead into the second.

The Cougars would improve upon their first quarter offence in the second with Simon Wal adding 10 more points of his own and Tristen Kamal hitting for 8. While the Cougars offence was picking up the pace their defense was holding its own. The Sault defense made it hard for Niagara to gain much offensive traction, and when shots went up the Cougars grabbed a majority of the loose balls by out rebounding the Knights 14-5 in the quarter lead by Kevon Clarke (6), Tristen Kamal (3) and Stephen Miller (3). The impressive ten-minute stretch had the Cougars 44-36 lead going into the half.

The third quarter started a bit slow for the Cougars as Niagara would begin to find their game. The duo of Kevon Clarke and Tristen Kamal did most of the damage for the Cougars as they attempted to maintain their lead but the Knights would do it by committee with six of their seven players scoring points. The Cougars would go into the final quarter with a 63-56 lead, looking to get a second win in three games.

The Knights continued to push the pace in the fourth quarter trying to take the lead away, but the Cougars did not break as Stephen Miller moved the ball around assisting four buckets while attempting to put the game out of reach. Head coach Pat Murray would call a time out to rally the team which was just what they needed in a close game as Miller hit a clutch free throw to put the Cougars ahead by two. Niagara took a three for the win but it would rim out, and Miller would go on to hit two more free throws to put the game out of reach in the dying seconds of the quarter, leading the Cougars to an 87-83 win against the Knights.

Cougars Scoring: Simon Wal (24 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals), Tristen Kamal (20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), Kevon Clarke (14 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists).
