Recap For Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team travelled to Barrie, ON to participate in the Georgian Classic. There they played two games against OCAA east division teams, the Georgian Grizzlies and the Loyalist Lancers. Both Friday October 12th and Saturday October 13th showcased competitive games by the Cougars, who came home with a 1-1 record.
Friday's matchup saw your Cougars take on the host Grizzlies, at halftime the teams were a single point apart with the Cougars leading 17-16. Both teams came out swinging in the third with a back and forth match, heading in to the fourth quarter the Cougars were trailing the Grizzlies by 3. In the fourth Autumn Hay-Beharriell hit back to back threes, the team didn't look back afterwards, outscoring their opponents by 10 points in the final quarter. Emma Filion had a big game down low scoring 10 points; with Cassidy Sabourin, Bryanna Bakers, and Emma all providing strong defense in the paint with several blocks, the Cougars were able to tame the Grizzlies winning 50-43.
Saturday the victorious Cougars looked to continue their momentum as they took on the Lancers. The first quarter was a battle between the forwards, the second quarter the whole team started to get involved ending the half with a 31-29 score with the Cougars on top. After halftime the Lancers can out hot scoring 23 points in the third quarter, however the girls ran out of stream and could not respond. The Cougars had a valent effort in a 60-46 loss. Cassidy and Emma had 15 & 14 points respectively in the defeat. Mercedes Ryan showed a veteran presence controlling the ball and pace of the game for the Cougars.
The women's team will play one more exhibition game at Bay College in Michigan, and then start their season the following weekend October 27th & 28th against the Sheridan Bruins.
