Battle of the Cats

The Women's Basketball team travelled to Sarnia Ontario to compete in 2 games over the weekend against the Lambton Lions in OCAA action.

In the first game on Saturday Novemeber 10th at 2:00pm the Cougars challenged the Lions, however the Lions took on the task as the took a lead in the first quarter of 16 - 5. This lead was generated by the Lions being able to successfully press the Cougars to turn over the ball twice as much as they did. The team rallied behind Mercedes Ryan who lead the team with 9 points, in the second quarterthe Cougars scored 15 points, bring the score to 20 - 33 for the Lions. After halftime the Lions didn't look back and continued there impressive performace scoring 36 points in the second half, were the Cougars scored another 19, but falling to the Lions 69 - 39.

 On Sunday Novemeber 11th the Women's team had their rematch with the Lions, the Cougars started off slow, down 10 - 4 so head coach Gary Cormier called a time out, to regather the girls. This worked out perfectly as the Cougars came back onto the court ready to play, they scored 15 points in the remainder of the first quarter. The Cougars kept this pressure up again out scoring the Lions in the second quarter, the Cougars held a 33 - 24 lead going into the half. The Cougars being lead by Mercedes Ryan who had a game high 19 points along with 10 rebounds, tried to fend off the Lions in the second half. The Cougars lossed the third quarter 16 - 13 but still remainded in the lead, however the Lions kept a level head and continuied playing their game. Even with all the pressure the girls remaidned calm and held the lead to three minutes left in the game, where Lambton's Daylin Galvin got hot, scoring back to back threes for the Lions, which helped them surpass the Cougars. The Cougars were not able to recover falling just short of a win, losing 63 - 55.

The Cougars will be back in action this Friday as they host the 0-5 Redeemer Royals. Tipoff starts at 6:00pm in the Health and Wellness Centre, come out and support your Cougars.
