Cougars take on the Royals

The Women's Basketball team took on the Redeemer Royals over the weekend which saw 2 competitive games with 2 evenly matched teams.

The Cougars hosted the first game on Friday November 16th, which saw both teams starting off the game hot with the lead changing several times throughout the first quarter. Down by 2 the Cougars looked to claw their way back into the lead, which they were able to do winning the second quarter 17 – 16, but trailed at halftime to the Royals 30 – 29. The Royals came out after halftime wanting to put the game out of reach for the Cougars, they slowly grew their lead by going on small runs, although the Cougars came back with a run at the end of the quarter, but the Royals increased the lead to 9 points. The Cougars gave it their all in the final quarter scoring 14 points, but were unable to surpass the Royals, who scored 20. The final score of Fridays game was 71 – 56 for the Royals. Mercedes Ryan had a team high of 16 points followed closely by Cassidy Sabourin with 14points.

On Saturday the Cougars had a rematch with the Royals, the game started off as a highly defensive game with a low score of 6 – 5 in the first quarter for the Cougars. The Royals heated up during the second quarter and brought surpassed the Cougars to have a 23 – 16 lead going into the half. Gary Cormier tried to spark the girls to increase their level of play, Cassidy Sabourin responded to Cormier and scored 9 of the Cougars 16 points in the third quarter, however the Royals were able to match the Cougars with 16 points of their own. With a lead of 11 points in the fourth quarter the Royals were looking strong, however  just when it looked over for the girls they made a roaring comeback with a 16 – 0 run giving the Cougars a 2 point lead going into the last 30 seconds of play. The Royals decided to foul Mercedes Ryan in the last 6.6 seconds of the quarter to send her to the line. Where Ryan hit one of her free throws increase the Cougars lead to 3 points. With 6.6 seconds left the Royals head coach drew up a play to try and tie the game, the ball was inbounded and with 1 second left on the clock Alex Webb score a three pointer for the tie, this brought the game to overtime. It was a highly contested overtime with the teams going back and forth; the royals were able to take control taking a 3 point lead that the Cougars couldn't overcome. Cassidy Sabourin had a game high 21 points in the Cougars loss.
