Cougars fall just short to the Mountaineers

This past weekend the Cougars women basketball team took to the road to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers. While there the women played two regular season games, the first game that took place on Friday Jan 18th 2019 saw to very competitive teams struggle to take a commanding lead. The first quarter saw the teams tied up at 16 – 16, Mercedes Ryan was playing an outstanding game as she contributed half of the Cougars first quarter points. The second quarter was another tight affair ending 32 – 31 for the Cougars, during this quarter the rest of the Cougars started to provide scoring as seven out of the ten women contributed to the Cougars overall effort. The Mountaineers came out storming in the third quarter scoring 21 points pulling ahead of the Cougars by 10 points during the quarter, however the Cougars fought back throughout the third and the fourth quarters bring the score knotted at 60 – 60 with a minute left on the clock. In the final minute of the game the Mountaineers were able to get the go ahead layup that sealed the game. The Cougars fell just short of the win, despite three Cougars scoring in the double digits; Cassidy Sabourin had a team high of 19 points.

 The next day the Cougars had their rematch against the same Mountaineers. The Cougars got off to a slow start, as the Mountaineers gained a strong lead 8 – 14. This didn't stop the women from coming back with a strong performance in the second and their quarters the Cougars were able to outscore the Mountaineers 26 – 23. With the game tied with the clock running down Mohawk made a final push able to pull ahead of the Cougars outscoring them 20 -17 in the final quarter. Cassidy Sabourin had an outstanding game scoring a game high 22 points and the game high with 17 rebounds.

The Cougars are back in action this weekend as they travel to London, ON. to take on the Fanshawe Falcons Saturday Jan 26th and Sunday Jan 27th. Both games will be livestreamed at: http://fanshawetv.ca/live/
