Cougars lose to division leading Falcons

Cougars lose to division leading Falcons

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

GAME 1: SAULT COUGARS vs FANSHAWE FALCONS

SAULT STE. MARIE – Coming off a tough opponent last weekend in St. Clair, the Cougars got no break this past weekend as they welcomed the division leading 8-1 Fanshawe Falcons. The Cougars were the ones to draw first blood as Emma Filion knocked down a 3 right off the start of the game. Fanshawe would then give the Sault a glimpse as to why they are up top of the division as they went on a 15 point run. Filion would score on a jump shot to end the quarter with a score of 15-5. Despite being down by 10 after the 1st, the Cougars did a good job on the defensive end with all five starters pulling down at least 2 rebounds each.

The 2nd quarter had the Cougars continue to test their 3-point ability with Filion again knocking down a long range shot and Andrea Gorman adding a 3 of her own. The Cougars continued to match Fanshawe in the rebound category but the starting five for Fanshawe showed up big for the second consecutive quarter shooting a combined 8-10 (80%) from the field. The Cougars would go into the half down 38-17.

Cassidy Sabourin led the Cougars 3rd quarter scoring with 6 points and Skylar Toms led the 4th with 4 points but Fanshawe continued to knock down their shots in the second half and would walk away with the 77-38 win.

Cougars Scoring: Cassidy Sabourin (9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block), Emma Filion (8 points, 3 rebounds), Skylar Toms (6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals).

GAME 2: SAULT COUGARS vs FANSHAWE FALCONS

SAULT STE. MARIE – Game two for the Cougars would start off much differently for both teams as the Cougars and Falcons would start the game a combined 0-13 with each preventing the other from getting any offensive traction. The one similarity to game one was that again, the Cougars would draw first blood with a layup from Skylar Toms. After Fanshawe hit a 3 after the score by Toms, coach Gary Cormier would call a time out for the Cougars after which Clara Yanchuk answered with a 3 point shot of her own to take the lead back in the ladder half of the 1st quarter. Fanshawe could then score 8 points in the last 2 minutes of the quarter to take the 18-5 lead.

The Falcons would go on a 22 point run to start the 2nd quarter and never look back as Fanshawe guard Chuot Angou would drive their offensive for the remained of the game finishing with 20 points.  The Cougars would go on to hit a couple of of 3's (Yanchuk and Gorman) but could not contain the division leading Falcons, and Fanshawe would finish with the final score 78-18.

Cougars Scoring: Clara Yanchuk (6 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal), Cassidy Sabourin (4 points, 15 rebounds, 1 block), Andrea Gorman (3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist).

Up Next: The Cougars play host to the Humber Hawks at the Sault College Health & Wellness Centre on Saturday November 30th @ 4:00pm and Sunday December 1st @ 12:00pm.
