Cougars Snap Skid with win against Bulldogs
The Sault College Cougars Men’s Hockey program travelled to Adrian, MI for their final road trip of 2024. After a delay due to bus troubles, the puck dropped at 7:50 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena. As the game got underway, both teams would provide strong defensive play, and the goalies were equal to the task with Sault College goaltender Gavin Disano turning aside all 14 shots sent on net and Alex Herman turning aside 13 for the Bulldogs.
With a scoreless second period underway, the Cougars would head to the penalty and the Bulldogs would strike first with Jack Waldo notching his seventh of the season on a rebound chance. The Cougars would head to a 5-minute powerplay midway through the period. On the extended powerplay opportunity, Ethan Biggs would score his first of the season banging home a loose puck from the side of the net. Ethan Esposito and Michael Starzomski would pick up the assists for the Cougars. Adrian College would manage to kill off the remainder of their penalty kill before heading back to the powerplay once again. The power play would strike again as Gabe Vijuk fired home a wrister from the slot, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.
With Sault College trailing by a goal entering the third period, the Cougars came out flying playing disciplined hockey. Midway through the frame, Ethan Novello was able to find twine as a powerplay expired sending a wrist shot top shelf from the right circle. Caleb Wood and Cameron Lemcke would pick up the assists. Building on the momentum, Riley Lavallée would chip a puck to Jake Kovacs who entered the zone with speed and went over the glove of the goaltender giving the Cougars their first lead of the game. Dylan Winsor would pick up the secondary assist on the play. The Cougars would hold on to the 1-goal lead and finish with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night. Gavin Disano recorded 26 saves in the victory.
The Cougars will be back in action Sunday afternoon before heading for winter break.
