Cougars look to reset after tough game versus Lindenwood
The Sault College Cougars squared off with the top-ranked team in the ACHA D2 region on Saturday night, the Lindenwood Lions at the Centene Ice Center in St. Louis, MI.
The Lions came out fast in the opening period, sending 13 shots toward the Cougars netminders. They would eventually break through the defence and take a 1-0 lead at the 9:27 mark of the first. The Lions would build on the momentum, adding goals at the 10:15 & 13:15 mark extending the lead to 3 goals and prompting the Cougars to make a change in net. Bringing in Trennis Riley would make little difference as the Lions kept up the pressure and added a fourth goal before the period was over, sending Sault College into the locker room trailing 4-0.
Lindenwood would capitalize on an early powerplay to start the second period, pushing the lead to 5. Cougars defenceman, Chase Johnson Would break the shutout, scoring with just under a minute and a half to go in the period. Penalty trouble would set in as the Lions would manage two power-play goals in the final minute of the period, pushing their lead to 7-1.
The Lions would start the third period on a continuation of their 5-minute powerplay and would score one more time. Ethan Esposito would score his 15th goal of the season on a feed from Nick Jameus, but this was as close to a comeback as the Cougars would get as Lindenwood added two more goals down the stretch to finish Cougars off by a final score of 11-1.
The Cougars are back in action with a rematch against the Lindenwood Lions on Sunday, December 8th.
